Born 13 July 1931 in Timaru
Started on Flugel Horn aged 5 under fathers tuition
Aged 10 family moved to Wanganui
Changed to trombone aged 13
Teenage years in Brass bands moving on to local dance bands at 20
Moved to Auckland aged 24 in 1955 to play in local dance halls and in the Radio Band series.
Three Christmas seasons at Mt. Maunganui with an Auckland band followed by 3 further seasons with own Dixieland Band
Joined Frank Gibson Snr in Aucklands first RockNRoll band at the Jive Centre
Moved to the Crystal Palace in 1960 leading the Merv Thomas Dixielanders for a 4 ½ year engagement
2 years at Trillos Westhaven
Merv Thomas Octet residency at the Peter Pan
4 years leading the band at Harro’s Hofbrahouse
Long time member of the Bridge City Jazz Men
12 years with Pete McGregor’s “Prima Swing Riot”
Multiple tours with overseas artists like, Shirley Bassey, Harry Seccombe, Bruce Forsyth, Basil Brush, Miss NZ Show, Cilla Black, Renee Geyer, Rolf Harris, John Rowles etc
