Popular Australian jazz vocalist Hetty Kate is often lauded for her ‘natural musicality’, unadorned vocal style and impeccable timing; and it is these qualities that have made her sought after by audiences and musicians alike. Hetty has performed as a professional vocalist for less than a decade, but in that time has certainly made her mark on both the Australian and international jazz scenes. She is one of Australian jazz luminary James Morrison’s favourite singers, has graced stages and festivals from New Zealand to New York, and now divides her time between Australia and Europe.
James Morrison remarks that Hetty has "a stage presence only matched by the clarity of her voice" and thus included her as the featured soloist for his international sell-out symphonic concert 'The A to Z of Jazz' - which toured New Zealand in 2015. This concert traversed the history of jazz and yielded a live recording which won a coveted ‘Bell Award’ in the Australian National Jazz Awards in May 2015.
For this concert, Hetty will perform as a trio accompanied by two outstanding jazz musicians; Australian guitarist James Sherlock and local bassist Olivier Holland. Born in Christchurch, James Sherlock is one of Australia’s most captivating and exciting guitarists. He has toured across Australia and internationally, and personal career highlights include performing with the MSO, guitar virtuoso Martin Taylor, Katie Noonan, Sheila Jordan, Kristin Berardi and a long list of Australia’s finest. James won the prestigious ‘Ike Isaacs International Jazz Guitar Award” and was nominated for the Freedman Fellowship. Much in demand as a band leader and sideman, James is part of the quintet heard on Hetty Kate's NZ album release ‘Dim All The Lights’.
As well as showcasing classics and curios from the Great American Songbook, the trio will perform favourites from 'Dim All The Lights' as well as many new songs from Hetty Kate's latest releases. Sure to please fans of timeless music, swinging jazz and beautiful singing.
