MERV THOMAS - awarded Honorary Life Membership - 14-7-20

Merv has been an outstanding musician and bandleader for something approaching 75 years. He is the consummate professional both in terms of his musical skill and as a band leader, whilst retaining humility and approachability.

Merv was band leader at some of Auckland’s iconic music venues such as the Peter Pan Cabaret and the Crystal Ballroom. While jazz is his first love Merv was one of the first to bring Rock and Roll to NZ. Merv has also been on many tours with international artists and a mainstay of the bands one saw on local television shows like Happen Inn and C’mon.

Merv has been the announcer for the Auckland Jazz and Blues club for the last 4 years and has thrown himself into that role with his usual enthusiasm, humour and professionalism. The Auckland Jazz and Blues Club is pleased to award Merv Honorary Lifetime Membership.

JENNY B - 7-7-20

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - 5-7-20

he AGM of the Auckland Jazz and Blues Club was held today at the Pt. Chevalier RSA.

Members who were unable to attend will receive an annual report and minutes in due course.

Highlights of the meeting included the presentation of Life Membership to Bruce Hilliard for his dedicated services as a committee member over the last 16 years, the presentation of flowers to Miriam Hilliard (existing Life Member) for her dedicated services as treasurer over the last 16 years, and the presentation of a card to Brian Edgar for his dedicated services as a committee member.

In addition, our President Mike Walker had his 80th birthday belatedly recognised with a very tasty "musical" birthday cake. (The photo explains all.) Mike's special birthday concert that had been planned for 31 March could not take place owing to the lockdown. A huge thankyou to Mike for all his dedicated hard work behind the scenes and his leadership to the officers and volunteers to keep the club running. As a result, we have a very successful vibrant club with great support.
