Bridge City Jazzmen

  • Point Chevalier RSA 1136 Great North Road Auckland, Auckland, 1022 New Zealand (map)

The Bridge City Jazzmen was founded in 1962 by Don Bruce and John Wilcox. In 1963 there were changes in the line-up with Bruce King (drums), Ray Pilkington (clarinet), and Neil McGough (trombone), joining Don Bruce, John Wilcox and Nick Wilcox (double bass, tuba).

In the late 1960s the band went into recess, but reformed again in 1994, bringing in Bernie Allen (clarinet), Merv Thomas (trombone, vocal), and Bob Ewing (double bass).  Then following some deaths and disabilities with in the ranks, the band is now back in business, having welcomed Neville Grenfell (trumpet), Cameron McArthur (double bass), and Warwick Simpson, standing in for Bernie Allen who has been unwell.

Following on from the band's previous 2015 concert at the Club, we have played to two sell out audiences at the Commerce Club, Remuera, and will be there again later in the year. We are also booked for the Rotorua Jazz Club early in 2017.

The Bridge City Jazzmen continue to be inspired by the Chicago Dixieland style of the Eddie Condon All Stars.
