Gjazz5 – Algeria/India Fusion Project taps into a rarely explored area of music fusion between some of the rhythmically richest cultures on this planet, India and Algeria. Project initiator Olivier Holland, a familiar face on the Auckland scene, is bringing in from overseas the accomplished world music/jazz expert Djamel Laroussi from Algeria on guitar and vocals. Manjit Singh, originally from India but residing in Papatoetoe, is the Indian music expert in this mix and well known in New Zealand as tabla player ‘par excellence’. Olivier Holland on bass and Stephen Thomas on drums are completing the lineup.
A mind-bobbling mix of Indian and Algerian rhythms in a framework of world music and jazz, this evening will be an event like no other, presenting a musical mix that is like no other; a celebration of culture, rhythm, friendship and new music that will be premiered at the Auckland Jazz and Blues Club.
