Toby Barrett is a Melbourne-based saxophonist originally from Auckland, New Zealand.
After studying Jazz and Improvisation at the University of Melbourne, Toby returns home to launch his debut album through a series of shows around the North Island. The album is inspired by Toby’s research into the appeal and paradoxical pleasures of sad music, using conceptual metaphors as a source for creative generation. Additionally, the music of Ben Wendel, Remy Le Bouef, Joe Lovano, and other ECM recording artists heavily inspires the album.
Toby (saxophone, FX) will be joined by two outstanding Australian musicians (and housemates) Will Ellerton (piano) and Matthew Morgan (drums), alongside incredible locals Chelsea Prastiti (vocals), Iggy Nama Ruci (alto saxophone), and Tyler Diprose (upright bass).
The album will be released on the 5th of February, so this is a special pre-release gig presenting the music for the first time in New Zealand.
