John Leigh Calder is a singer/song writer, musician (upright and electric bass and guitar) with a unique style – he started playing music in NZ early 1960’s. His vocal style echoes the feel of Ray Charles, Chet Baker and Aretha Franklin.
John moved to the UK in the 70’s where he performed and featured with top UK musicians such as John Critchinson (Ronnie Scott’s pianist) and Colin Wood (Acker Bilk’s pianist). The John Leigh Calder Band was conceived in1993 since he has been back in Sydney. They are a group of talented Sydney musicians playing their own music which incorporates jazz and blues and early soul with a distinctive feel and entertaining delivery full of animated groove and understated intensity.
