Neon Quaver was created in the very early 1980’s by two Levin boys David Lines (Piano) and Richard Ghent (Flute, Flugel Horn and Vocals). After two weeks of rehearsals David and Richard did a few gigs at the historic Melba Restaurant and were eventually joined by Richard Adams on violin. This ensemble played venues like Rick’s American Cafe and the Corner Bar in the historic Ponsonby Gluepot Hotel.
During the corner bar daze, the quavers as they were called acquired a rhythm section and eventually were blessed with the master guitarist Nigel Gavin. It is this core of David Lines, Richard Adams, Nigel Gavin and Richard Ghent who are now developing the unique quaver sound, of electro acoustic instrumentation with no rhythm section, in preparation for recording in early 2019.
The repertoire ranges from original instrumental compositions that are melodic and rhythmical, in the flavour of Lyle Mays and Keith Jarrett with a number of covers from Rickie Lee Jones, Split Enz, Sting etc; that are particularly suited to the instrumentation and vocal range the quavers explore.
Neon Quaver's significant degree of musicianship, allows for a wide range of sound exploration during performances that connects with the audience in very pleasant and accessible manner. This acoustic element allows for the audience to enjoy their conversation and socialising with it being enhanced by the atmosphere the quaver sound generates.
